STUTTGART, Germany — The Kelley Hotel won the 2005 Lodging Operation of the Year Award for its group in a worldwide competition of Army Lodging facilities.
The hotel, on Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart, won for medium-sized facilities, 50 to 99 rooms. It was judged against about 25 similar-sized hotels in areas such as bookkeeping, reservations, cleanliness and guest amenities, according to Dave Roach, the hotel manager.
“I’m pretty proud for the entire staff,” said Roach, who was assistant manager when the hotel won the award in 2002.
The hotel was awarded a trophy and a check for $5,000 to spend on unfunded projects.
The hotel operates at about 87 percent of capacity, Roach said, and has a staff of 20.
“You treat people the way you’d want to be treated if you were standing on the other side of the desk,” said Robert Willoughby, one of the desk clerks.
Roach said each Army Lodging facility staff performed a self-assessment and forwarded the result to its regional manager. Regional managers picked their best hotels and forwarded the results to the worldwide competition, where past winners and other judges visited the sites and chose the winners.
Roach accepted the trophy last month at the 8th annual Army Lodging Workshop for Managers in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
Other worldwide winners were Hunter Lodging at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. for small facilities; the Northern Lights Hotel in Fort Wainwright, Alaska for large; and Fort McCoy Lodging in Wisconsin for super.
