CAMP LESTER, Okinawa — More than 100 people, including doctors, corpsmen, nurses and law enforcement personnel, took part in recent sexual assault response team (SART) training at the U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa.

The training focused on forensic examination, investigation and victim intervention, according to Amanda Woodhead, hospital spokeswoman.

The training was organized by Navy Lt. Laura Bennett, who is the hospital’s SART leader and a nurse corps officer from the OB/GYN clinic. Bennett and other hospital staff members also gave presentations on sexual assault issues and profiles of sexual offenders.

Staff judge advocates, special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and victim advocates also were on hand to give lectures on everything from prosecuting sexual offenders, to processing crime scenes to gather and preserve biological evidence, to psychological care of victims.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Leslie Rubio, leading petty officer of the hospital’s OB/GYN clinic, said the class “really teaches you the signs of abuse. Some of the pictures were a bit graphic for me but it really opened my eyes that abuse goes on here.”

The training, Rubio said, “demonstrated how to catch signs of abuse in patients by how they act, what they say, and most importantly what they do not say.”
