YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — The 18th Medical Command has selected two winners in its National Nurse’s Week essay contest.
Seoul American high school student Leo Pacheco and middle school student Emily Williams were selected as winners from their schools, according to a medical command spokesman.
Almost 30 students entered essays addressing the topic, “What do you think of when you hear the word ‘nurse?’”
Pacheco wrote that nurturing, understanding, responsibility, stability and eagerness “pop in my mind when hearing the word nurse, along with many other thoughts and emotions.”
“They take pride in themselves in caring for others and nurturing them as well,” Pacheco wrote of nurses. “When I think of nurses I think of heroes doing what they enjoy, nurturing and caring for others!”
Williams wrote that nurses count among the most important people in the medical field.
“I have never met a nurse who has been unpleasant,” she wrote. “When I think of a nurse, I don’t think of a grouchy man or woman. I think of a kind, caring, helpful, and positive/optimistic person.”
Each winner will receive a $25 Army Air Force Exchange Service gift certificate and an 18th MEDCOM award certificate.
