Security for Bush trip

NATO surveillance planes based in Geilenkirchen, Germany, will be used to augment security during President Bush’s visit Thursday through Saturday to the Netherlands and Latvia, according to a NATO press release.

The planes to be used are part of NATO’s fleet of 17 E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System, or AWACS. The modified passenger jets are each capable of tracking high- and low-altitude aircraft movements at a range of 230 miles, according to the release. About 3,000 military and civilian personnel from 12 nations work at the Geilenkirchen base.

Bush will travel to Russia and Georgia on Monday and Tuesday, according to a White House press release.
