KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — The old saying goes that those who can’t do, teach.
But that doesn’t apply to a group of Defense Department schoolteachers in Germany. Art teachers are showing off their artistic talents at the “Art in Bloom” exhibit downtown, and Sunday is the last chance for art lovers to see the paintings, drawings, watercolors and photography.
Terese Sarno, a teacher at Ramstein Intermediate School, said the exhibit is a chance for teachers to express themselves and show the public what they can do.
“Teachers so often don’t get a chance to show what they can do other than teaching,” she said. “But we are multifaceted.”
Fifteen teachers from Kaiserslautern to Darmstadt have displayed their artwork at the Gartenschau’s Alter Schlachthof Exhibition Hall since mid-April. Art instructors who are a part of the Overseas Art Education Association came up with the idea for the exhibit about three years ago.
Linda Sells, an art teacher at Kaiserslautern Middle School, has already sold several pieces of her artwork. A buyer paid 700 euros for her painting of tulips. She sold one of her pieces to a friend before she could hang it on the exhibit wall.
Sells, a teacher with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools since 1987, has displayed her paintings in local banks in the Kaiserslautern area, but never has been part of a group art exhibit. She said having the exhibit builds credibility with parents and gives pupils an incentive to learn art.
“This is one of the most positive teaching tools I have,” she said.
The art exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
