GINOWAN, Okinawa — A Marine Corps Air Station Futenma Marine who reported to police April 16 that she was stabbed near the base lied about the incident, according to Okinawa police.
The 22-year-old woman initially claimed she was stabbed in the side by an attacker just after she left a bar near MCAS Futenma. After looking into her allegations for more than a week, Okinawa Prefectural Police said, they determined she had made up the story.
The Marine, who wasn’t named in keeping with the local police custom of not releasing the identities of victims of violent crimes, had darted into a bar near the air station’s main gate at 11:15 p.m. calling for help, according to a police report. She later told military police that a tall black man, unknown to her, stabbed her while she was walking toward the gate after she left the bar.
She was taken to the U.S. Naval Hospital on Camp Lester for treatment of a wound in her side.
An Okinawa police spokesman said her story began to unravel when she spoke to military police. She admitted she made up the story, that she’d injured herself with a small utility knife, the Okinawa police spokesman said.
He said the wound was self-inflicted but the woman gave no explanation to Okinawa police for her actions.
Since the woman apparently admitted to military police she had lied, Okinawa police won’t pursue charges against her for making a false claim, the police spokesman said.
A Marine spokesman said Tuesday that the incident remains under investigation by military police.
