DARMSTADT, Germany — The Army’s Installation Management Agency-Europe has sent out nearly 37,000 surveys aimed at improving soldiers’ quality of life.

The Army Leisure Needs Survey — a 16-page questionnaire covering everything from travel opportunities to on-post family recreation — has been given to soldiers and civilians at 20 Army bases throughout Europe.

Of the 36,800 surveys handed out, 21,439 were given to soldiers, according to IMA-E officials.

The survey asks about Morale, Welfare and Recreation facility usage and satisfaction, frequency of participation in leisure time activities, and the importance of MWR programs. The deadline to return the surveys is May 31.

Past surveys have resulted in beefing up outdoor recreation equipment, adding new facilities to communities and improving advertisement of MWR programs, according to Victoria A. Palmer, IMA-E MWR marketing chief.

The last survey, conducted in 2000, resulted in major construction projects in Europe, Palmer said.

Among them:

An addition to the Stuttgart Panzer Casern Bowling and Family Entertainment Center.Renovation of the Escape Club outside of the Cambrai-Fritsch Casern in Darmstadt.Renovation of Wiesbaden’s Rheinblick Golf Course. An addition to the Heidelberg Bowling and Family Entertainment Center.Renovation to the Sullivan Barracks Top Hat Club in Mannheim. An addition to the Larson Barracks Auto Skills Center in Kitzingen. To get more community improvements, people have to fill out the survey, IMA-E officials say.

“The greater the number of responses, the more accurate and helpful the information is in guiding the Army in providing the MWR programs the community wants and needs,” according to a news release from IMA-E. “This makes it critical that every recipient of the survey take the time to complete it.”

Participants can opt to complete the questionnaire in a traditional paper format or complete the survey online through a secure Web site provided with the paper survey, IMA-E officials said.
