PYONGTAEK, South Korea — The U.S. Army in Korea has named four members of its Taegu-Pusan region communities as “outstanding volunteers” for the past year.

The awardees were from the Army’s Area IV region — camps Henry, Walker and George in Taegu, Carroll in Waegwan and Hialeah in Pusan, according to an Army news release.

The Area IV-wide “outstanding volunteers” were: Michaela Cannon, who volunteers in various capacities, mainly with the Taegu American School at Camp George; Kim Kang-hee, who volunteers at the Occupational Health Service at Camp Carroll; Spc. Brandon Hildreth, active with the Better Opportunities for Single (and Unaccompanied) Soldiers Program; and Justin Sprague, who gave 170 hours with the Camp Hialeah Child and Youth Services.

“If you talk to a counselor, if you talk to a preacher, anywhere, they will tell you everyone has a gift,” Army Col. Donald J. Hendrix, Area IV Support Activity commander was quoted as saying.

“Finding it, and employing it in our community is just awesome,” he said. “It just makes all the difference in the world.”

Area IV counts nearly 1,000 registered volunteers. They logged 55,922 volunteer hours over the past year, the Army said. Volunteer hours are computed annually based on a period from April 1 - March 31.

In addition, each Area IV locale presented awards to its volunteers.

For the Taegu installations they were: Kim Hye-ri, who works twice a week at the Camp Walker Library; and Whitney Dalton, for her efforts with the Multicultural Gospel Service at Soldier Memorial Chapel on Camp Walker.

Awardees for Camp Carroll in Waegwan were: Spc. Catherine Keating, for logging 660 volunteer hours this past year with the BOSS program; and Donald L. Wilson for work with Camp Carroll’s Information Management Office.

Camp Hialeah’s awardees were: Sondra Ludwig, for her aid to the Hialeah Women’s Club; Spc. Andrew Martinovich, and Park A-young, both for their work at Camp Hialeah’s Child and Youth Services.

The Army said more information on volunteering was available by phone: Taegu, 768-8126; Camp Carroll, 765-7900, and Camp Hialeah, 763-3571.
