A soldier assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division died Wednesday from wounds suffered in combat in Iraq, officials said Thursday.

Few details were available about the incident Thursday, other than that it occurred in Anbar province, which includes the city of Ramadi, where 1st AD troops have been in heavy combat in recent months. The name of the soldier is being withheld until family notification has been made, officials said.

The 1st Brigade first deployed to northern Iraq, where it built on security gains made in Tal Afar and Sinjar.

Earlier this year, they were shifted to Ramadi, where they have led an intense campaign to push gradually into the city.

Many of the troops from the 1st AD’s 2nd Brigade originally deployed last fall to Kuwait, where they were held as a ready reaction force. Since then, several units have been called up to bolster U.S. forces in Ramadi and Baghdad.
