A soldier assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division was killed in combat Tuesday, the U.S. military command in Iraq said late Tuesday night.

The soldier — whose name is not being released until his family is notified of the death — was killed in Anbar province, officials said. While no details were given, other than that the soldier was killed by “enemy actions,” most of the 1st Brigade soldiers are deployed to the Ramadi area.

The city has long been an insurgent stronghold, and the brigade was brought in earlier this year to step up offensive operations. The brigade had spent the beginning of its tour in Tal Afar, in northwestern Iraq.

At least 17 division soldiers have been killed in Iraq this year.
