American and Iraqi troops killed two suspected insurgents and arrested 16 others in a series of raids in villages near the city of Muq- dadiyah, officials said Tuesday.

U.S. units from Task Force Band of Brothers and Iraqi troops from the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division took place in Khlaniya and Hembis, villages in Diyala province. In addition to the arrests, the combined force seized a cache of automatic weapons, bomb-making materials, a rocket, and mortar and artillery shells, a U.S. military news release read.

The U.S. units included the 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team and the 101st Airborne’s 101st Combat Aviation Brigade. The two deaths came after a brief firefight in which one Iraqi soldier was wounded, officials said. No U.S. casualties were reported.
