14th annual East Japan International Friendship Marathon draws 11,000
SAGAMI GENERAL DEPOT, Japan — It was a perfect day for running Sunday as a record number flocked to Sagami General Depot for the 14th annual East Japan International Friendship Marathon.
About 11,000 runners participating in the half-marathon, 10K and 5K races were cheered on by another 7,000 people, according to Bob Mcketa, co-coordinator for the event.
“We were very fortunate to have a good break with the weather,” Mcketa said. “This is an excellent community relations program that we put on with the Kanagawa Runner’s Association each year.”
Joshua Mumford, a sophomore at Zama American High school who placed second in the status of forces agreement men’s 5K, said preparing for the race was a great way to stay in shape.
“It was thrilling running with the Japanese runners and I feel it brings us all closer together,” Mumford said.
“It was wonderful and very well organized,” said Carrie Broncheau, a visitor from Bremerton, Wash.
She said the number of runners in the event surprised her and was a bit of a challenge for her because she is used to running alone. But that didn’t dampen her spirit.
“It’s really great to see how many people here are interested in physical activity,” she said.
