Maj. Gen. Loyd S. “Chip” Utterback is being promoted to lieutenant general and will assume command Friday of 13th Air Force at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii.

Utterback, deputy commander of Pacific Air Forces, will succeed Maj. Gen. Edward A. Rice Jr., according to an Air Force news release Tuesday.

Rice will assume Utterback’s current assignment as deputy commander, it said.

The 13th Air Force’s mission is command and control of air, space and information operations in U.S. Pacific Command area of operations, except for South Korea.
