Families in the Franconia region will be able to enjoy all the delights of an American summer festival in the coming week, but with a German twist.

The 11-day German-American Volksfest kicks off Thursday at Würzburg’s Leighton Barracks. Americans and Germans alike are invited to attend the festival, which will honor the departing 1st Infantry Division and its 10 years of being headquartered in Würzburg.

The fest will include rides for children and adults, live bands, games and a surfeit of food and drink. Fun will start each day at 2 p.m., except on Tuesday and Wednesday, when events will kick off at 4 p.m. Festivities will shut down at 11 p.m. on the weekdays and midnight on the weekends. The main entrance to the festival from off post will be through the Gebrunn Gate.
