KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — One servicemember was killed and four others were injured here Friday in a four-car crash on a main base avenue.
The deceased’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, 18th Wing spokesman Maj. John Hutcheson said Friday evening.
The four injured people, also servicemembers, were taken to U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa on Camp Lester. Their names and conditions also were withheld.
The crash occurred at 12:20 p.m. on busy Douglas Avenue, Hutcheson said. The road was slick from rain showers that soaked Okinawa throughout the day.
Hutcheson said the crash was not related to any exercise.
No other details were available Friday night, and an investigation was continuing.
"We are extremely saddened by the loss of a fellow servicemember," 8th Wing commander Brig. Gen. Ken Wilsbach said in a news release.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the individual’s family and friends at this time."
