STUTTGART, Germany — The assistant editor of Stuttgart’s garrison newspaper was named 2006 Department of Army civilian print journalist of the year.

Brandon Beach of The Citizen won for stories on the Patch High School video production class making programs for AFN, a local boxing tournament called New Year’s Knockout, and a report on the local bird flu conference.

Beach said he tries to make the most of each story even when time isn’t on his side.

“It’s a story where [the reader] is going to get past the second paragraph because there’s a certain energy in the writing,” Beach said. “We’re all trying to make deadlines, but we all try to infuse as much creativity into our articles as we can.”
