KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — The Defense Department on Wednesday named Maj. Gen. John O’Connor to head the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, replacing Maj. Gen. Aundre Piggee, who has held the post since August 2011.
O’Connor, a native of Toledo, Ohio, currently serves as U.S. Army Forces Command’s deputy chief of staff for logistics at Fort Bragg, N.C., a position he’s held since July 2011.
O’Connor is a 1984 graduate of the University of Miami, where he earned a bachelor of science in business administration. He was commissioned the same year into the Army Transportation Corps.
The Pentagon has tapped Piggee to take over as director of logistics for U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
A date for the change of command has not been set, but it is expected to happen mid-summer, according to a 21st TSC spokesman.
The unit, headquartered in Kaiserslautern, is made up of some 12,000 soldiers and civilians spread across Europe. As part of U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army, 21st TSC supports military operations throughout Europe and Africa.
Earlier this year, 21st TSC personnel deployed to Turkey to prep for the arrival of U.S. Patriot anti-missile batteries near the Syrian border after cross-border shelling of Turkish villages late last year prompted the country, a NATO member, to seek assistance from the alliance.
