Team capsules Division ISouth KoreaSeoul American Falcons2010-11 season record — 27-2, two-time defending Far East Division I Tournament champion.Coach — Jesse J. Smith, first season.Key returners — Mecca Perkins, Jr., C; Hannah Nelson, Jr., GKey newcomers — Jasmine Thomas, Jr., PF; Iyanna Williams, So., F-C; Jasmine Hobbs, So., PG; Michelle Higgins, Jr.; Sade Akinbayo, Fr., C.Outlook — Reloading. The team of the ages is no more, with Destinee Harrison, Jordan Elliott and Liz Gleaves graduated, but enough pieces remain that the Falcons can still make a run at their 20th straight KAIAC D-I title and another deep run at Far East D-I, Smith says.

OkinawaKadena Panthers2010-11 season record — 14-18, fourth in Far East Division I Tournament.Coach — Tiffany Madison, first season.Key returners — Maria Vaughan, Jr., SG; Kelly Kaneshiro, Sr., PG; Carais Lawrence, Jr., SG.Key newcomers — Eisiah Lawson, So., PF-C; Angelita Main, So., PG-SG.; Madeline Velazquez, Sr., F.Outlook — Rebuilding. Very young squad, but coachable and athletic. Still, a long way from the back-to-back Far East champion teams of the late 2000s.

Kubasaki Dragons2010-11 season record — 4-25.Coach — Shane Butler, first season.Key returners — Sydney Johnson, So., F; Angelica Juliano, Sr., G-F; Nicholle Rentas, Sr., G; Shakayla McGuire, Sr., F; Naomi Yocum, So., F.Key newcomers — Carolyn Thompson, Sr., G; Ameyna Jackson, So., F; Maryilyn Rodriguez, So., F; Allie Reichenberg, Jr., (transfer from Missouri); Jordan Huritage, Jr., (transfer from Pennsylvania).Outlook — Rebuilding. Butler, the team’s third coach in four years, has a young team that’s trying to put trying times behind it. “I won’t let anybody break these girls spirits,” she said. Losing post player D’An Hurst to transfer didn’t help.

JapanYokota Panthers2010-11 season record — 30-6, third in Far East Division I Tournament.Coach — Paul Ettl, third season.Key performers — Erika Ettl, Sr., G; Kathryn White, Sr., F.; Sydney Glover, Jr., F; Rebecca Warren, So., G; Cora Argallon, Jr., G; Trinity Davis, So., F.Outlook — Contending, once they get all their key pieces back in place; Glover is out ill and Warren hurt her ankle on the first day of practive. Still, Coach Ettl feels his team will be there in the end.

Nile C. Kinnick Red Devils2010-11 season record — 19-14, fifth at Far East Division I Tournament for second straight year.Coaches — Samuel Williams, first season (assisted Charles Boyer last two years).Key returners — Emily Stith, Sr., post; Erica Carter, Sr., G.Key newcomers — DeAsia Brown, Fr., PG.Outlook — Rebuilding. Handful of veterans chose not to play this season, but Williams says he remains “optimistic. In two weeks, they’ve come a long way. They’re quick learners.”

Division IISouth KoreaOsan American Cougars2010-11 season record — 19-9.Coach — Bruce Barker, 16th season.Key returner — Ashley LaFortune, Sr., F.Key newcomers — Caprice Lockett, So., F; Trellini Lunsford, F.Outlook — Rebuilding. Cougars surprised last season, but much of the firepower from that team has departed. LaFortune can score and battle inside. Lockett is an up-and-coming athlete who fired her first warning shots on the volleyball court; can she do the same in basketball?

Daegu American Warriors2010-11 season record — 25-12, Far East Division II Tournament runner-up.Coach — Edward Hearn, first season.Key returners — Leanne Quizon, Sr., PG-G; Sarah Wright, So., PG; Kierra Pineda, So., SG; Lari Robertson, So., C.Key newcomers — Raven Calloway, Sr., SG-SF (transfer from Augusta, Ga.); Marchei Gosley, Jr., PF.Outlook — Rebuilding. First Warriors team in 12 years to not have Michelle Chandler (transfer to Sigonella, Sicily) coaching them. Hearn has just three upperclassmen; the rest are sophomores, but there’s enough talent to mold into a possible contender later this season.

JapanE.J. King Cobras2010-11 season record — 14-16.Coach — Mimi Long, second season.Key returners — Tara Long, Jr., PG.; Jaimee Staggers, So., C; Deborah Avalos, So., G; Carmela Lucey, Sr., G.Key newcomers — Rachel Fraser, So., F; Davina Avalos, Sr., F; Yasmine Weddle, Jr., G (transfer from Lajes Field, Acores).Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Good core of veterans, but for the most part, “a young squad still learning the game,” Long said.

Matthew C. Perry Samurai2009-10 season record — 4-22.Coach — April Kelley, first season.Key returners - Rebekah Harwell, Jr.; Courtney Beall, So., post.Key newcomer — Briana Drake, Fr.Outlook — Rebuilding. Focused on making a presence this year at Far East, Kelley says, by fine-tuning the basics and coming together as a team. Stopping Harwell, who’s already tied the Pacific single-game scoring record with 44 points early this season, can be a handful.

Robert D. Edgren Eagles2010-11 season record — 13-14.Coach — Sarah Richardson, 22nd season.Key returners — Xala Sledge, Sr.; Jen Black, Sr., G (still recovering from ACL surgery last spring); Alexis Farrow, So., F.Key newcomers — Sahjada Edwards, Fr.; Maya Mack, Fr.; Briana Easton, Fr.; Vanessa Black, Fr.Outlook — Rebuilding. Eagles lost several key cogs to graduation and transfers. Jen Black’s health is a question mark; if she can go, that will add backcourt speed. “We work until we can’t work any longer,” Richardson said.

Zama American Trojans2009-10 season record — 7-23.Coach — Mark Millington, first season.Key performers — Briana Myrick, Sr., post; Ariel Hicks, So., PG; Tyren Ward, Fr., G; Rachel Walls, Sr., F; Samantha Callahan, Sr., F.Outlook — Rebuilding. Third coach in three seasons. Young players demonstrating leadership, Millington says; Ward plays tenacious defense; Hicks, though a sophomore, has been elevated to team captain. Walls and Callahan, the best of friends on and off court, are soccer players by trade, but Millington sees them as rebounders and baseline shooters.
