When – 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014Where – Christian Academy Japan, Tokyo.What – Final regular-season tune-up for the six Kanto Plain wrestling schools before their annual Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools finals on Feb. 8 at St. Mary’s International School and the DODDS Pacific Far East meet Feb. 13-15 at Yokota. The other three schools competing are American School In Japan and DODDS Japan entries Zama and Nile C. Kinnick.Wrestlers to watch – As with many prior meets between the schools, the Kanto Invitational will feature three returning Far East Tournament champions in Ryan Vasconcellos (122 pounds last year, 135 this year) and Jeffrey Koo (168, 180) of St. Mary’s and Eric Overton (129) of CAJ.Also – In their last meet on Jan. 23, a dual meet at ASIJ, Vasconcellos trimmed down to 129 and faced Overton. Vasconcellos won by technical fall and St. Mary’s routed CAJ 43-19

Other games of note

Basketball Friday, Jan. 31-Saturday, Feb. 1 Matthew C. Perry’s boys and girls basketball teams, which play at the small-schools level, make a rare visit to Tokyo-area Division I international schools. They each go to CAJ on Friday, then the boys head to St. Mary’s and girls to Seisen International on Saturday. Perry and Seisen used to compete together in Far East Division II Tournaments, haven’t played since Seisen resumed competing at the D-I level in the mid-2000s.

Basketball Friday, Jan. 31-Saturday, Feb. 1 Nile C. Kinnick and E.J. King make the pilgrimage to Misawa Air Base, where the Robert D. Edgren Eagles lie in wait. It’s the last long-haul journey for the Cobras and next-to-last for the Red Devils during the regular season before their Far East tournaments Feb. 17-20.

Kubasaki’s boys and girls have a full house of games scheduled against Japanese teams, as Maehara and Oroku come calling on the Dragons boys and Haebaru and Kita Nakagusuku visit the Dragons girls. The latter is a familiar foe for the girls; Kubasaki beat Kita Naka 71-59 in last week’s 8th Okinawa-American Friendship Tournament semifinal.
