A Celtic settlement in Bundenbach, in the Hunsrück region of Rheinland-Pfalz, is the venue for a medieval festival with a strong musical program. The 24th Altburg-Festival runs Friday through Sunday and features numerous live folk rock acts.

Friday night sees Celtic rock band Garden of Delight take the stage, while Saturday, the sounds of Breton dance music, folk music with Irish, Scottish, German and American roots, and a genre known as folk-punk are bound to shatter any neighbors’ tranquility.

Enjoy pyrotechnic shows between acts on both evenings. Away from the stage, jesters, magicians and craftsmen bring new life to the old settlement. Adult entry costs 8 euros on Friday evening and 5 euros before 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday; youths pay 3 euros. Those up to age 12 enter free. Entry Saturday after 5 p.m. costs 15 euros. A pass for all days costs 20 euros.

To make a weekend of it, camp at the town’s sports field for 5 euros per day for adults and 2.50 euros up to age 12. Campers must register (in German) in advance at http://tinyurl.com/cm4jy4j.

It’s also possible to camp at the festival parking area, although no sanitary facilities will be available there. Campers can grab breakfast on the festival grounds Saturday and Sunday from 8-10 a.m., but in the spirit of true Middle Ages travelers, they should bring their own plates and cutlery. The British Broadcasting Corp. will be there to film the event, so wear your best era-appropriate garb. Learn more at www.altburgfestival.de (in German).
