In 1861, Maj. Gen. Robert Anderson was forced to lower the American flag and surrender Fort Sumter, S.C., to Confederate forces after the first battle of the Civil War.

Four years later, on April 14, 1865, Anderson came out of retirement to raise the same flag over the fort at the end of the war.

This week, reenactors and tourists taking the ferry from Charleston, S.C., marked the 150th anniversary of the war's end and Anderson's triumphant return to the fort with some special ceremonies.
