On February 29, 1992, Bosnian Muslims and Croats voted for separation from Yugoslavia; since the vote took place in a leap year, the anniversary is marked on March 1. The 1996 celebration was the first one held in peacetime, following the Dayton agreement and the signing of a peace treaty in Paris in late 1995.
