The 1960s and 70s witnessed the development of multi-role fighters-bombers taking advantage of advances in avionics and air-to-air weapons systems.
The more capable missiles and radars allowed pilots for the first time to engage unseen opponents flying beyond their visual range.
New air-to-ground weapons included laser-guided bombs and missiles with electro-optical guidance.
