The 1950s was characterized by a rapid proliferation of jet designs on both sides of the Iron Curtain and also in neutral and Third World countries.
Technological advances included radars and radar-warning instruments, the first air-to-air missiles, afterburners, and area ruled fuselages which resulted in sustained supersonic speeds.
