Officially named “Theatrium” but also referred to as the Wilhelmstrassenfest, a two-day street festival brings a sense of refined enjoyment to Wiesbaden Friday and Saturday.

The fest spills around the Hessen State Theater and Kurhaus across the expanse of lawn known as the Bowling Green. The program for Germany’s oldest street festival includes live entertainment on five stages, diverse musical acts, costumed street performers and sophisticated snacking.

This year’s edition of the festival has Switzerland as its special guest and promises to bring a touch of mountain culture to the Hessen capital. Those feeling brave enough can try the Swiss national sport, a type of wrestling known as Schwingen. Alpine horns and yodelers will help complete the Swiss picture.

Urges to shop can be indulged by visiting the artisans market in front of the Kurhaus on both days. Read more at www.theatrium2013.de (in German, with limited information in English).
