Happy almost New Year’s Eve, everybody! We hope you get the new year off to a great start and that you have an abundance of volksmarches in store for you this year! Just keep the fliers coming our way and we will provide you with walking opportunities for your weekends.

• Tomorrow, we will attend one of our favorite walks. It is the annual Oliebollenwandeltocht in Simpelveld, Netherlands. Oliebollen are a seasonal Dutch pastry which, if you eat them, are said to bring you good luck in the new year. These tangerine-sized balls of fried dough can be plain or made with raisins. They are served warm with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. This walk will have oliebollen and Glühwein (hot, spiced wine) at the start and controls. What a great combination to fight off the cold!

• Friday night, there will be a 5-km torch walk in Wolferstadt, Germany, starting between 5 and 7 p.m. You can walk the regular 5- and 11-km trails during the day, if you can’t stay for the evening. This event is for IVV credit only.

• With walks this weekend being scarce, we will mention some upcoming walks so you can start planning now.

Jan. 14-15: Limburg an der Lahn, Germany. The trails here usually take you along the river in the valley, but Saturday between noon and 3 p.m. you can walk an 11-km “old city” route. A shopping bag in assorted designs is the prize.

Jan. 29: Grosbliederstroff, France. This is a bus trip for the Heidelberg International Wandering Club.

Feb. 25- 26: Rothenburg ob der Tauber. One of the most enchanting cities in Germany.

March 25: Houmont, Belgium. Dead Man’s Ridge Walk. Similar to the Bastogne Historical Walk in that there are plenty of re-enactors. This walk does not offer IVV credit.

There will be more information on these walks as their dates approach and as more fliers and facts roll in.

If your club is hosting a walk, please let us know well in advance so we can let folks know about it. We need an absolute minimum of two weeks of advance notice to meet our publication deadlines.

This also applies to any upcoming walks that you consider to be exceptional. Let us know why you think the walk is great, and we will share your enthusiasm with your fellow readers.

We look forward to your feedback and input. Drop us a few lines at two.walkers@yahoo.com.
