The clatter of drums and wooden barrels being beaten will fill the old barrio streets of San Sebastián for 24 hours starting at midnight Jan. 19 during the annual Tamborrada drum festival.
The festival honors the city’s patron saint, the Donostia of San Sebastián. At midnight, the city raises a flag in the Plaza de la Constitution, launching parades of drummers dressed as soldiers or cooks beating barrels.
The drummers march through the city with residents joining in with their own instruments. Children march in their own drumming parade during the day. The party continues until midnight Friday, when the flag on the plaza is lowered.
