Week 6: Oct. 24It's bright lights and jazz hands this week on "Dancing with the Stars." This week's theme is Broadway, and each team has crafted an original song from a Broadway musical.

Last week, Army veteran and actor J.R. Martinez’s sizzling samba with partner Karina Smirnoff swept them into first place. Can he do it again?

Before the dance is a montage of #TeamMartinoff practicing their quickstep. Smirnoff explains to Martinez that this quickstep is probably the most ambitious routine she’s ever planned for “Dancing with the Stars.”

“That’s pretty intimidating,” Martinez told his partner. “But I won’t let you down.”

Martinez and Smirnoff danced to "Hot Honey Rag" from the musical “Chicago.” It was lively, well-paced and the partners appeared perfectly in sync to me. In the audience was at least one of Martinez’s “All My Children” cast mates -- I saw the red hair of actres Sarah Glendening.

The camera flashed to judge Len Goodman, who is beaming. I had my hopes up that this week, he would give Martinez a 10.

But maybe he was still cranky from the dust-up he had with professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Hisperformance with soccer star Hope Solo had been just before Martinez's. Goodman was quite tough on Solo, and Chmerkovskiy took up for his partner and told Goodman that maybe he shouldn't be judging anymore.

From the judges

Goodman: “You are truly relentless and you just keep on keeping on.” His score: 9.

Bruno Tonioli: “What you’ve done, you’ve created a rip-roaring, audience-rising, 11 o’clock number! It’s a hit!” His score: 10.

Carrie Ann Inaba: She loved it. Her score: 10.

Total score from the judges is 29 -- and they are tied for first places with Ricki Lake and her partner Derek Hough.

The judges didn’t give any constructive criticism or any criticism at all. And in that case, where’s Martinez’s other point, Goodman? I wish he would make it clear what Martinez could do to get a 10.

After the performance, Smirnoff said of her partner, “I think J.R.’s personality and positivity, as well, is absolutely amazing.” Me too, Smirnoff.

The show closed with a group performance, and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

What did you think of the show? Did you think Goodman's score was fair? What did you think of what Chmerkovskiy said to Goodman? Let us know in the comments. Check back tomorrow to see if Martinez made it through elimination.
