AustriaAsh Wednesday sees not only the beginning of Lent but also the opening of Vienna’s Kalvarienmarkt (Calvary market), a 360-year-old tradition.

Lining the Kalvarienberggasse will be stalls selling Easter crafts, polished glass and wood carvings. Children’s rides and theater and music groups are also on the docket.

The market’s specialty item is the Bamkraxler, a toy on which a male figure with a bell slowly slides down a pole. The toy is sold only during Lent. Its history goes back to the biblical story of Zacchaeus, a wealthy chief tax collector in Jericho. Because he was short, Zacchaeus climbed a palm tree to see Jesus as he passed. When Jesus asked him to come down, Zacchaeus scurried down the palm to welcome him into his home.

The market is open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until April 9. Find more information at www.kalvarienberg.at (in German).
