For more than a century, March 8, International Women’s Day, has been commemorating women’s achievements, alongside their struggles for equality and liberation. An official public holiday in a handful of European countries including Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia and Moldova, as well as the German state of Mecklenberg-Vorpommern and the city of Berlin, the holiday also carries significant weight in Poland, Romania and other former Soviet bloc nations.
In Italy, the day is celebrated as La Festa della Donna, and women may find themselves presented with bouquets of cheery yellow mimosas, one of the first spring flowers. Many of the country’s state-run museums and archaeological sites offer free entry for women on the day (but an advance reservation might still be required).
In celebration of a date in honor of women, a look at sporting events organized solely on their behalf seems appropropriate.
Luxembourg: The magazine ELLE Luxembourg is the organizer of the first ELLE Run, set for March 15. Women of all sporting abilities are encouraged to sign up for this race taking place in a mostly rural setting, the Kuebe Farm in Luxembourg Kirchberg. Participants can choose from 5- or 10-km distances, and both walking and running the routes is allowed. A part of the proceeds from the race will be donated to the nonprofit organization Femmes en détresse (Women in Distress). A pop-up village near the start and finish line provides participants with a place to connect and linger pre- and post-race. Races begin at 9:30 a.m., and the registration fee for all races is 35 euros. Online: tinyurl.com/yc33n3ev
