As drums echoed through Hala AWF, fans rose to their feet, waving flags and chanting as they took in the on-court action during a recent game against KSK Qemetica Notec Inowroclaw.

From tipoff to the final buzzer, the energy inside the building rarely let up. It was in that moment I realized that in Europe, basketball is more than a game. It’s an experience.

That atmosphere has been on full display at several Enea Poznan Basket home games I’ve attended. Here, professional basketball meets passionate fan culture in the heart of the city. It’s safe to say I’ve become a regular — and a fan.

Part of the appeal is convenience. For a sports lover like me, being able to attend live professional basketball just minutes from my apartment takes the hassle out of planning a night out. There’s no long drive, no weekend travel and no full-day commitment.

The team competes in Poland’s I Liga, the country’s second-highest professional basketball level. While it sits just below the premier Polish Basketball League, the quality of play is high enough to enjoy.

It’s the kind of basketball where spacing, ball movement and defense matter. In other words, it looks like professional basketball, not LA Fitness at 3 o’clock.

There’s also a stateside connection for U.S. personnel living in Poland, as I Liga rosters commonly have American players. That adds a small sense of home and an easy reason to show support.

In Poznan, point guard James Washington III has quickly become a fan favorite, drawing loud reactions from the crowd with his playmaking and leadership on the court.

Even if you’re not fully invested in the standings, there’s something familiar about cheering on a fellow American.

Each game delivers the same intensity. Fans pack the stands well before tipoff. Drums, scarves and team flags add to the atmosphere, creating a scene that feels closer to European soccer culture than to a typical American basketball game.

As is the case with many U.S. sporting events, the entertainment doesn’t pause when the clock stops. Cheerleaders keep the team spirit flowing, and fans in the stands are randomly picked to take part in shooting contests for a chance at prizes.

The experience also comes at a fraction of the cost of major professional leagues,’ and that affordability makes it easy to turn a game night into a full evening out.

Concessions are limited to hot dogs, popcorn, chips, drinks and the like, so grabbing a meal at a nearby restaurant before tipoff is often the better option.

The compact venue keeps fans close to the action. I usually sit just behind the team, and from that vantage point, it’s clear there isn’t a bad seat in the building.

The layout offers unobstructed sight lines from nearly every angle and amplifies the crowd noise, turning routine possessions into crowd-driven moments.

For those new to Polish sports culture, attending a game is also an easy way to connect with the local community. Fans of all ages fill the arena, and it’s common to see families, students and longtime supporters seated side by side. The excitement is contagious.

The season runs through April, so there are plenty of home games remaining. Whether you’re a basketball fan or simply looking for a lively local experience, Enea Poznan Basket offers a high-energy night out.
