Neckar River beer garden in Stuttgart area abounds in ways to get respite and recharge

There’s perhaps no better summertime German tradition than beer garden lounging. The options are seemingly endless regardless of where you are, and everyone has their favorites.

In the greater Stuttgart area, I can’t think of one much better than the Uferstüble in Ludwigsburg.

Positioned on the Neckar River, the place is a local institution. The beer garden has been operating on the site for over 100 years, making it a touchstone for generations of local Germans.

I recently paid the Uferstüble a visit as a stopping point during a cycling excursion that started in downtown Stuttgart. Its proximity to bike trails makes it a good place for refreshment before carrying on.

One of the nice features of the eatery is a beach bar section, where you can sit on a deck chair and dig your toes into the sand. You can either sun yourself or seek shade under one of the beach umbrellas.

There also is an Aperol spritz bar, which I suspect is bustling in the evenings. I was there in the early afternoon, and the beach was mostly empty.

The abutting main section of the beer garden, however, was quickly filling up with people arriving for Sunday lunch.

The menu has all the typical offerings you get at a beer garden in the Baden-Wurttemberg region. Specialties like spätzle and maultaschen are always reliable choices. The portions of those offerings are large, and I’ve enjoyed both on past visits.

There also are various types of grilled steaks and bratwursts and a number of side dishes like roasted potatoes and potato salad and other vegetable salads.

On this particular stop, I skipped the food, knowing I had a long bike ride in front of me, and instead enjoyed a cold alcohol-free hefeweizen while stretched out on a beach chair.

Since you’re on the banks of the Neckar, there also are canoeing and paddle board rental opportunities a few steps away if you want to explore the wider area.

My visits to Uferstüble have always come earlier in the day, so I don’t know what the evening vibe is like.

There is a small stage on the site for musical performances, which range from rock cover bands to Schlager, a German-style party music with a slightly honky-tonk feel.

By the time I climbed back on my bike, it was easy to appreciate why generations of locals have kept coming back. Uferstüble delivers the atmosphere that makes German beer gardening special.
