Rupertikirtag/ St. Rupert’s FairLocation: Salzburg, Austria Dates: Sept. 20-24 This fair with roots dating back centuries retains its days-of-yore feeling by keeping modern-day attractions to a minimum and emphasizing old customs and crafts of yesteryear. Visitors can enjoy traditional culinary treats, folkloric performances, or shopping for quality handmade goods from their makers. The action unfolds in the pretty surroundings of the Old Town. A decorated tent provides an Oktoberfest-like atmosphere. Traditional dirndl and lederhosen are the typical attire at this fest, so if you’ve got it, this is the place to wear it. Kuerbisregatta/ Pumpkin RegattaLocation: Ludwigsburg Castle Grounds, Ludwigsburg, Germany Dates: Sept. 22-23 (from 1 p.m.) Against the backdrop of Bluehendes Barock, extensive gardens surrounding a castle, boats fashioned out of huge pumpkins will be launched and paddled across a pond. Once visitors tire of watching the races, the huge pumpkin exhibit offers plenty of visual appeal. This year’s theme is the forest and the creatures which inhabit it. Snacks from stuffed pasta to soup can consumed on the spot, and oils and jams can be bought at the gift shop for later enjoyment.
