New Wine & Cheese FestivalLocation: Vajdahunyad Castle, Varosliget, Budapest, Hungary Date: Nov. 24 (10 a.m.-7 p.m.) A castle makes the perfect backdrop for an outing focused on the country’s flavorful wines, paired with the perfect cheese accompaniments. Admission: the 2,500 Hungarian Forint ticket price (about $9) includes tastings, a wine glass and admission to an exhibition at the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture. Online:

Foodies Festival ChristmasLocation: Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), Edinburgh, Scotland Dates: Nov. 23-25 The festive season gets off to the right start with this celebration of all things related to the foods that make the holiday. In addition to sampling and shopping, things to do here include taking part in workshops and master classes, watching top chefs and celebrities cooking up a storm at The Chefs Theatre, or "Great British Bake Off" stars and patisserie chefs baking show-stopping cakes in the Cakes and Desserts Theatre. Admission: Adult day tickets cost 10 pounds for admission on Friday and 14 pounds for entry on the weekend; ages 12-18 pay 5 euros; those under 12 enter free. Online:

Jean Bouin Mundo DeportivoLocation: Barcelona, Spain Date: Nov. 25 (first races start at 9 a.m.) The city’s abuzz with a sporting air on the day of this massive foot race, which attracts several thousand participants. It takes its name from a French athlete who was a runner up in the Stockholm Olympics of 1912 and killed in action during the First World War. Participating runners choose from distances of 5 and 10 km in what’s one of the country’s oldest athletics races. As registration has closed, you’ll have to be content spectating this year. Stalls heave with crops of the late autumn season. In addition to veggies such as onions and garlic, sold in attractive braids, ceramics and other handiworks are offered. Samichlaus-Einzug/Santa Claus ParadeLocation: Zurich, Switzerland Date: Nov. 25 (5 p.m.) Zurich’s citizens get in the mood for Christmas as Santa Claus, known locally as Samichlaus, and his assistants, known as “Schmutzli,” parade along the Bahnhofstrasse and hand out gingerbread to the children lining the route. The procession, which includes 15 themed wagons, sets off from Uraniastrasse and passes along Bahnhofstrasse to Buerkliplatz. Admission: Free Online:
