BAMBERG, Germany — Located near the heart of downtown Bamberg lies what could be the city’s best Italian restaurant, Salino.

Consistently packed during both lunch and dinner, Salino features an extensive, reasonably priced menu which should satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

Much more than your standard pizza and pasta, Salino has listed daily specials, as well as a value menu for the weekday lunch crowd, with all items price at or below 4,90 euros.

For regular menu items, pizzas run between 6,20 and 10,90 euros; pasta dishes from 5,90 to 9,40; and larger entrees average about 18. There’s also a large wine and spirit list, featuring drinks that complement any food choice.

Along with good food, Salino’s atmosphere is peaceful. Whether out in the back patio near the big pizza oven in the main floor, the restaurant is surprisingly quiet.

The prompt and friendly wait staff speaks good English, and provides English menus as well. Dress is casual.

Salino is easy to find, located near the E.T.A. Hofmann theater and Bamberger Hof. Parking may be available on the side of the building. If not, the Geyerswörth Parking Garage — next to the city’s tourist information office — is just up the street and well within walking distance.

Diners looking for a nice evening meal should probably dial ahead for reservations (0951-57980), especially on the weekend, and anyone looking for a midafternoon meal should go elsewhere, as Salino is closed between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
