WASHINGTON — A ceremony at the National World War II Memorial Thursday morning marked the 75th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Luzon, an invasion whose goal was to free the Philippines' largest island from Japanese control.

More than 47,000 allied troops were killed or wounded in the battle, the largest campaign of the Pacific war, which raged on until mid-August.
