Europe Traveler's event picks for May 11-13

At the Genuss-Festival in Vienna's Stadtpark, tasty treats such as cheese, ham, jam and smoked fish are ready for sampling and purchase. The event runs May 11-13.

Wiener Genuss-Festival

Location: Stadtpark, Vienna, Austria
Dates: May 11-13 (11 a.m.-9 p.m. May 11; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. May 12; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 13)
Around 200 exhibitors sell specialty products from cheese to ham, jam, smoked fish and more in the inviting setting of an urban park. Warm dishes for enjoying on the spot are available too.

Antwerpen proeft/A Taste of Antwerp

Location: Waagnatie, Antwerp, Belgium
Dates: May 10-13
Top chefs and rising talents in the culinary world serve their signature dishes at this festival by the river Scheldt. Visitors can sample the dish of the day, enjoy beer and food pairings, watch cooking demos, or try more exotic offerings from the food trucks on site.
Admission: Day tickets cost 8 euros and include a welcome drink. The sampling dishes go for 5 or 7.50 euros each. 
 
 

Cesky Pivni Festival/Czech Beer Festival 

Location: Letna Park, Letenska plan, Prague 7, Czech Republic
Dates: May 10-26 (noon-midnight daily)
Seven small, mid-size and large Czech breweries offer more than 150 kinds of beers, to be enjoyed alongside a hearty meal of traditional Czech meats, cold cuts or freshly baked goods brought to the table by servers in traditional folk costumes. On some evenings, concerts take place.
Admission: 100 Czech Koruna, about $4.70.
 

Hafengeburtstag/Port Anniversary

Location: Hamburg, Germany
Dates: May 10-13
Historic sailing vessels, maritime parades, fireworks, music and more add to the the nautical flair of this bustling port city. Visitors can board and explore some of the craft, listen to shanty choirs, or peruse stalls offering goods from fish to handicrafts. This year’s partner country is South Africa. Highlights include a tugboat ballet at 6 p.m. and fireworks at 9:45 p.m. May 12, as well as the Grand Departure Parade at 6 p.m. May 13.

Strassentheater Spektakel Zweibruecken/
Street Theater Spectacle

Location: Zweibruecken, Germany
Dates: May 12-13 (10 a.m.-10 p.m. May 12; 11 a.m.-6 p.m. May 13)
The inner city is abuzz with the sounds of music, drumming groups, performances by street artists, an exhibition of John Deere tractors and miniature models and a flower market.

Gelato Festival

Location: Piazza Castello, Milan, Italy
Dates: May 12-13
This traveling event calls in at cities across Italy and beyond in its search to find top gelato makers. The public samples the wares at a given site and votes for its favorite makers and flavors; their input, along with that of a panel of experts, determines the winner. Some of the flavors in this year’s competition include lavender and honey; ricotta and fig; and pear, pine nut, cannoli and salted caramel.
Admission: Tickets for sampling all the gelato cost 11.42 euros when purchased online.
 

Ibiza Medieval/Ibiza Medieval Fair of Ibiza

Location: Dalt Vila, Eivissa/Ibiza Town, Spain
Dates: May 11-13
Up to 100,000 visitors turn out each year to take in the sight of artisans, merchants, dancers and other entertainers against the backdrop of the UNESCO-listed walled city. Markets, craftsmen at work, shows and battle re-enactments make for a busy day out.
