The 1. FC Kaiserslautern’s once-stout defense collapsed early, and the Red Devils never recovered as Magdeburg handed them their first loss of the season 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the contest in Magdeburg, FCK had allowed just one goal in the opening five competitive matches.

Yet in the first 16 minutes, FCM put two past goalkeeper Julian Krahl, and the hosts’ defensive press caused the visitors fits throughout the match.

In the 12th minute, Magdeburg took the lead. After a turnover, Mortiz Kwarteng passed the ball to Mateusz Zukowski, whose shot Krahl blocked with his foot. The rebound fell to Emmanuel Iyoha, who put the ball inside the left corner of the net.

Left back Alexander Nollenberger doubled the lead in the 16th minute with a shot through traffic from 16 yards out.

Iyoha put the match to bed in the 53rd minute. The right winger had space on the right side of the 18-yard box and fired it past Krahl to the FCK keeper’s right.

With the loss, the Red Devils stay in sixth place with Sunday’s matches still to come. Magdeburg, meanwhile, jumps into third place.

Kaiserslautern returns to action on Sept. 19 when Eintracht Braunschweig heads to Fritz-Walter Stadium.
