The world’s largest wine festival returns to Bad Dürkheim, while music, history and flower power fill out the weekend. (Bad Dürkheim Tourism)
Wine by the glass, history behind usually-locked doors and plenty of live music are on tap this weekend.
From the world’s largest wine festival to a hippie market by the lake, here are five reasons to get out of the house.
Wine Fest: Raise a glass at the world’s largest wine festival, where more than 600,000 visitors are expected to descend on Bad Dürkheim for local wine, carnival rides and plenty of Palatinate food Friday through Tuesday. The more than 600-year-old fest features 36 traditional wine stands and roughly 300 wines and sparkling wines, with festivities continuing for a second weekend Sept. 18-21. Free admission.
Historical Building Tours: Peek behind doors that are usually locked Sunday as thousands of castles, churches, industrial sites and other historic landmarks across Germany welcome visitors for Open Monuments Day. The country’s largest cultural event offers tours, exhibitions and rare looks inside historic buildings, with participating sites throughout Rheinland-Pfalz. Admission is generally free.
Old Town Festival: Fill up on live music, food and old-town atmosphere as Speyer celebrates its 49th Altstadtfest in the winding streets of its medieval quarter from 4 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. Bands and performers take over stages scattered throughout the historic district, with festivities running past midnight both nights. Free admission.
Hippie Fest: Channel some flower power at this laid-back, hippie-themed market at Kaiserslautern’s Gelterswoog from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday. Browse handmade goods, fashion, décor and jewelry, join a yoga session or stick around for live music starting at 6 p.m. Admission is 3 euros.
City Festival: Rock, pop, jazz and party music fill downtown Landstuhl all weekend as about 20 bands perform across three stages at this lively city festival Friday through Sunday. More than 50 stands serve street food and regional specialties or sell handmade goods, and shops open for Sunday shopping from 1 to 6 p.m. Free admission.
