The 1. FC Kaiserslautern put together its best performance of the young season in a 3-0 drubbing of SV Darmstadt 98 at Fritz Walter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The win stretched FCK’s unbeaten start to the season to four 2. Bundesliga matches and five overall. The hosts’ output on Saturday equaled the number of goals they had scored across their first four matches across all competitions.
The Red Devils opened the scoring in the 43rd minute.
Midfielder Semih Sahin dribbled from the left wing, and he passed the ball across the face of the goal. At the back post, newcomer Mario Sauer, making his starting debut for the club, slid in and redirected the ball into the wide-open net a few yards out.
The hosts kept pressing for a second goal early in the second half and came close when captain Marlon Ritter launched a shot from outside the box that needed a diving stop by Lily goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen in the 52nd minute.
The Red Devils found the second goal in the 64th minute. Off a long throw, Maxwell Gyamfi headed further into the 18-yard box. Darmstadt left back Raoul Petretta failed to clear the ball and instead put it into the path of winger Thierry Fidjeu-Tazemeta.
The Austrian’s shot took a deflection off Petretta that went away from Schuhen and over the line.
FCK capped off the win via a final goal with seconds left in the match. Substitute striker Mergim Berisha beat his defender to a cross from Sahin and used his left shoulder to put the ball into the net in the fourth minute of second-half added time.
Despite controlling most of the match, Kaiserslautern almost found itself trailing early.
In the 28th minute, FCK defender Jacob Rasmussen tripped up Darmstadt’s Noah Weiβhaupt just inside the 18-yard box as the 24-year-old midfielder dribbled in from the left wing.
Lance Duijvestijn stepped up to take the penalty for the Lilies, but the Dutch attacking midfielder’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar. He headed the rebound over the net to end the threat.
With the win, the Red Devils moved into fourth place with eight points, although numerous matches are left to play in the 2. Bundesliga this weekend.
The Lilies, however, still sit at the bottom of the league with just one point through four matches.
FCK next travels to Magdeburg on Sept. 12. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. CET.
