1. FC Kaiserslautern and St. Pauli seek to get off the schneid when the two collide in Hamburg on Sunday afternoon in 2. Bundesliga action.

The clubs are in 14th and 15th places in the German second tier with two points.

Although they have the same point total and goal differential, they did so via different routes.

FCK has put together stout defensive performances, not allowing a goal. That includes a 1-0 victory over archrival Waldhof Mannheim in the first round of the DFB Pokal on Aug. 21.

The problem: The Red Devils can’t score. The goal in the final minute of extra time vs. Mannheim was their first of the season after 299 minutes of play.

Kaiserslautern completed moves in the transfer market this week to bolster the attack, bringing in forward Milos Lukovic from Racing Strasbourg and midfielder Mario Sauer from Toulouse FC.

St. Pauli, meanwhile, hasn’t struggled to find the back of the net. The issue has been holding onto leads.

The Kiezkicker scored first against SpVgg Greuther Fürth before tying 1-1. Then, St. Pauli led by two goals before Holstein Kiel managed to equalize before the match’s end.

To make matters worse, St. Pauli dropped its DFB Pokal match last weekend to third-division side Rot-Weiss Essen.

Sunday’s meeting at Millerntor Stadium will be the 43rd meeting between the Red Devils and the Kiezkicker. The last time the two faced off was on Jan. 20, 2024, a 2-0 win for St. Pauli en route to the team’s promotion to the Bundesliga.

FCK could be without a few key pieces in Hamburg. Winger Naatan Skyttä won’t be available because of a knee injury and Simon Asta and Owen Gibs will miss with muscular issues and a groin injury. Lukovic won’t make his Red Devils debut as he works back from muscular problems, too.
