The 1. FC Kaiserslautern defeated archrival SV Waldhof Mannheim at the death in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Friday, winning 1-0 in extra time of a match overshadowed by fans’ actions in the stands.

Without a goal through the first 299 minutes of the season, substitute Ibrahim Kanaté came to the Red Devils’ rescue in the final minute of overtime at Carl Benz Stadium in Mannheim.

The striker dribbled the ball from deep inside the Red Devils’ own half toward goal before passing to newcomer Alex Murphy on the left wing. Murphy passed it back to Kanaté, who curled a shot past goalkeeper Thijmen Nijhuis.

Three minutes later, the hosts almost equalize and send the match to penalties. Mannheim striker Terrence Boyd, a former FCK player, had a golden chance with the ball front in front of the goal, but goalkeeper Julian Krahl grabbed the ball to keep his third-straight shutout to begin the season.

The win extended Kaiserslautern’s perfect record against its rival in the DFB Pokal, having won the previous two meetings. It also marked the club’s first victory in the derby since Feb. 6, 2021.

Kanaté’s heroics almost didn’t come to pass as chaos ensued following the end of regulation.

Waldorf fans shot fireworks onto the field, while FCK fans responded by firing their own into the home fans’ stands. Referee Robert Schröder sent both teams to the locker rooms, while police flooded the field.

The match restarted around 30 minutes later once tensions cooled.

Both teams created opportunities throughout the contest but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Krahl came up big for the Red Devils once again. In the 12th minute, he pawed away a shot from Waldhof winger Kushtrim Asallari, and in the 86th minute, the keeper managed to parry Vincent Thill’s long-range shot that was deflected by Murphy.

The FCK shot stopper also received plenty of help.

In the 61st minute, Krahl got into trouble when he punched away a corner. The ball came back into the box, and Mannheim midfielder Maximilian Thalhammer pushed the ball past Krahl. Before Thalhammer could shoot, though, FCK center back Jacob Rasmussen cleared the danger.

Waldhof substitute Goncalo Gregorio almost broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, when the striker’s shot from distance ricocheted off the right post.

The Red Devils’ best chance in regulation came right at the end via Marlon Ritter. In the sixth minute of second-half added time, the captain’s shot from the edge of the box forced a diving save by Mannheim keeper Thijmen Nijhuis.

In the 110th minute, Fabian Kunze almost gave FCK the lead with a header off a Ritter corner. Mannheim left back Owono-Darnell Keumo cleared it off the line to keep it 0-0.

The Red Devils must wait for the draw to see who they play in the second round, which will be held Oct. 29-30.
