The Chili’s restaurant on Ramstein Air Base will remain closed until further notice while officials assess “infrastructure concerns” and develop a renovation plan, according to a base spokesperson.

The restaurant has been closed since June 24, when it shut down along with several other base facilities because of a heat wave. The following day, an inspection by the base’s bioenvironmental engineering team found E. coli in the restaurant’s kitchen and mold in the building’s basement.

Most facilities that closed because of the heat wave reopened June 29, but Chili’s remained closed.

The inspection report was shared on the Air Force amn/nco/snco Facebook page July 1 and later confirmed as authentic by base officials. The report documented standing water in the kitchen along with visible water damage, mold growth and persistent musty odors in the basement.

It also said indoor air quality measurements were within acceptable limits and were not expected to pose health risks.

Chili’s has not prepared, cooked or served food since the inspection, a base spokesperson told Stripes. Health officials determined there was minimal risk to food safety because of where the findings were located.

There is no timeline for reopening. Officials said updates will be shared with the community as repairs are assessed and renovation plans move forward.
