An annual anti-war protest outside Ramstein Air Base will return Saturday with activists gathering at several locations around the base.
Drivers should expect road closures and traffic issues in Steinwenden and Ramstein-Miesenbach, including along the access road to Ramstein’s West Gate and the L356 and L363, according to Kaiserslautern District officials.
A notice on Ramstein Air Base’s website advises personnel to use the ROB-MC gate for entry and exit on Saturday and that there will be security screening at the West gate by security forces as well as local police.
The post noted that nearby Kindsbacher Strasse will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the Saturday protest.
The Stopp Air Base Ramstein initiative, which has organized protests calling for Ramstein to be closed since 2015, is expecting approximately 500 people to attend Saturday’s rally.
In previous years, U.S. military officials have asked personnel to avoid the area and to be on the lookout for possible counter demonstrations.
The protest starts with a march at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Steinwenden “peace camp,” which was set up June 20, to Ramstein Air Base.
A second meeting point will be at the Ramstein train station at 11 a.m.
The final gathering place is at the roundabout on the main road that leads to the air base. The protest there will run from 12 p.m.-3 p.m.
“Ramstein Air Base remains a central hub for global warfare, drone operations, and military logistics. At the same time, the planned biolaboratory threatens to trigger a further dangerous escalation,” Stopp Air Base Ramstein’s website says.
