An American man allegedly stabbed his wife to death at a public playground in Linden on Tuesday while three of their four children were present, local authorities said.

The 40-year-old man, who has not been identified, pulled up to the playground in a car, got out and stabbed his estranged wife in the neck, according to a Thursday press release from the Kaiserslautern public prosecutor’s office.

After the attack, the man inflicted severe injuries on himself with the same knife and collapsed, the statement said. Police responding to the incident found him at the scene and transported him to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The statement said that in late March, the Kaiserslautern Family Court issued a temporary restraining order against the man, prohibiting him from contacting his 37-year-old wife or entering the family home.

The court also temporarily suspended his parental rights after he reportedly attempted suicide in the apartment and was described as being in acute psychological distress with ongoing mental health issues, the prosecutor’s office said.

Kaiserslautern police spokesman Bernhard Christian Erfort told Stars and Stripes that the man is an American but could not provide any further details.

Prosecutors said the suspect is accused of manslaughter but has not yet been able to provide a statement due to his medical condition.

Linden is about a 25-minute drive southwest of Kaiserslautern.
