The 1.FC Kaiserslautern gave fan-favorite Daniel Hanslik the right farewell with a 2-0 victory over Arminia Bielefeld on Friday evening in the last home match this season at Fritz Walter Stadium.
The win stopped the Red Devils’ three-match losing streak. It also marked the first time in nearly a month that the hosts found the back of the net.
Hanslik, who scored the decisive goal in the 2022 promotion playoff against Dynamo Dresden to help the club return to the 2. Bundesliga after four seasons in Germany’s third tier, is one of five Kaiserslautern players whose contracts will not be renewed at the end of the season.
He will depart along with Kenny Prince Redondo, Simon Asta, Luca Sirch and Florian Kleinhansl.
The 29-year-old forward wore the captain’s armband for the match.
FCK’s regular captain started the farewell party on the right foot. Marlon Ritter punished Bielefeld for committing a penalty in the 15th minute. Then, the 31-year-old midfielder assisted teammate Simon Asta’s 29th minute goal to double the hosts’ lead.
Mired in the relegation battle, Arminia had more possession but couldn’t get on the scoresheet. In fact, the Red Devils seemed the more likely to get a third goal, including through Dion Hofmeister in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time.
Hanslik left the field in the 87th minute to a standing ovation from the crowd at the Betzenberg, replaced by Redondo. Those two and the others leaving this summer after the match celebrated with the Westkurve for the final time.
With the win, FCK jumped over Hertha BSC into sixth place, although the Berliners can retake that position when they face relegation-candidate Greuther Fürth on Sunday.
The Red Devils finish their season on the road against the 1.FC Madgeburg on May 17.
