KMC residents are being reminded to be on the lookout for pranks on Germany’s Night of the Witches this Thursday.

Witches Night, known as Walpurgis Night, is often described as a mix between Halloween and April Fools’ Day. The tradition typically involves minor mischief, such as spraying shaving cream on door handles or wrapping toilet paper around trees and street fixtures. In some cases, children may stretch toilet paper across streets and ask passing drivers for a small “toll.”

However, more serious acts of vandalism are also possible.

The 86th Airlift Wing is advising residents not to leave trash cans, flowerpots and other yard decorations outside overnight as a precaution. Car owners with garages are encouraged to park inside.

Witches Night is observed on the eve of Germany’s Labor Day, a national public holiday on May 1.

Most German businesses will be closed Friday, including grocery stores, retail shops and government offices. Some restaurants and gas stations may remain open, but hours can vary.

Shops on U.S. bases will operate as usual.
