Rheinland-Pfalz will suspend deportations to Iran for the next three months due to heightened unrest in the country, state Integration Minister Katharina Binz said Wednesday.

“Anyone currently being sent back to Iran would face real danger to their freedom and life,” said Binz. “Rheinland-Pfalz stands for the protection of human dignity. That is why we are suspending deportations.”

The temporary ban took effect immediately and could be extended for another three months with federal approval. Deportations of criminal offenders and individuals considered threats to public safety are still permitted.
