Dining out in Germany just got a bit cheaper.

As of Jan. 1, the value-added tax on food served in restaurants, cafes and fast-food spots dropped permanently from 19 percent to 7 percent.

The reduced rate applies whether food is eaten on-site or taken to go. Drinks like coffee, soda and alcohol will still be taxed at the higher 19 percent rate.

Expect to see two VAT lines on your receipt, one for food and one for beverages.
