1. FC Kaiserslautern lost 2-0 on the road Saturday to Eintracht Braunscheig (1. FC Kaiserslautern)
It was not the Red Devils’ day as they lost 2-0 in Braunschweig on Saturday, missing a chance to move up in the standings.
Kaiserslautern was coming off last week’s 4-1 win over Kiel, while Eintracht had lost its last four games.
Starting for 1. FC Kaiserslautern were Julian Krahl in goal; Luca Sirch, Jan Elvedi, and Leon Robinson on defense; Dickson Abiama, Fabian Kunze, Semih Sahin and Mika Haas in midfield; with Naatan Skyttä, Marlon Ritter and Ivan Prtajin up front.
The match got off to a slow start in front of 20,808 spectators, with both teams testing the others’ defense. FCK had the first scoring chance of the game, but Eintracht keeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann stopped Naatan Skyttä’s shot in the 19th minute.
The home team had its first good chance to score three minutes later, but Florian Flick’s shot was blocked.
Braunschweig got a lucky break in the 31st minute when it appeared that Robin Heusser had fouled Skyttä on a fast break, but referee Timo Gansloweit didn’t make the call.
Three minutes later Braunschweig took the lead on a right footer by Max Marie from about 16 yards out, catching Krahl on the wrong foot.
Eintracht followed up with two more scoring chances in the 37th and 41st minutes, but Krahl made the saves.
In the 43rd minute Flick collided with Robinson and the Eintracht played had to be carried off the field with a gaping flesh wound near his knee.
The first half ended with another strong save by Krahl, the best Red Devil on the field.
Eintracht upped its lead to 2-0, four minutes into the second half. Erencan Yardimici beat Kunze to the ball on a breakaway and sent the ball past Krahl for the score.
The Red Devils could not get much going at all in the second half and had their best chances to score in the final minutes of the game. First Richmond Tachie had his header blocked on the goal line, then Hoffmann made a save against Prtajin, and Kaiserslautern failed to get on the board.
The loss dropped FCK to seventh place in the second division standings, while Braunschweig moved up to 15th.
Kaiserslautern next heads to Berlin for a round of 16 German cup match Tuesday against Hertha at 6 p.m.
